5 out of 5 stars Great product, baaaaad shipping...   January 18, 2004

I ordered these glasses and the Bordeaux glasses even though I was leery about the shipping problems. Sure enough, the glasses came in a box with barely enough air bubble padding on the sides and none on the bottom, as well as no "Fragile" markings anywhere on the outside of the box.

3 glasses from one set and 2 from the other were broken. They really need to wrap these better. Suspending them in peanuts would be better... something. Amazon was great about the exchange but one glass was still broken even in the replacement shipment. I'm glad these weren't a Xmas gift (for anyone but me) otherwise it would have really been sad. Fortunatly I was able to mix and match between the original shipment and replacement shipment to create a full set of unbroken glasses.

That being said, the glasses themselves are superb. Delicate, beautiful, just as nice as Riedel. I'd happily purchase more if they could get the shipping problems straightened out. If you're willing to deal with the potential for breakage.

3 out of 5 stars Damage during shipment could have been prevented   January 9, 2004

I ordered these wine glasses because of the rave reviews, but against my better judgement because of the complaints about the poor packaging and damage during shipment. I should have trusted my instincts. The wine glasses were in a box, and placed inside another, bigger box for shipment. Air pockets surrounded the sides and top of the box of wine glasses, but there was nothing underneath them to cushion them when the boxes were thrown, which is I'm sure what happened, particularly because the box was not in any way marked as containing fragile items. I ordered two boxes of the wine glasses, and returned both due to broken glasses.

5 out of 5 stars Great Glasses, Great Deal   January 8, 2004

I got the Burgundy set with the 'freebie' Bordeaux set and couldn't be happier. Both sets arrived without a scratch on them. I ordered the Chardonnay set about a year ago and those also arrived in perfect condition.
The price:quality ratio of Spiegelau glasses is better than Riedel, even without the amazing discounts at Amazon.
As far as dishwashing goes, they seem strong enough to withstand the gentle cycle. However, my old dishwasher has etched some of my everyday drinking glasses so I wouldn't dare put my treasured wine glasses in it. They're very easy to hand wash with very hot water, which is better anyway since soap leaves residual odors that can interfere with the wine.

5 out of 5 stars The best value by far   January 7, 2004

I gave these glasses a 5-star rating for three reasons: 1. This stemware is nice to use - somewhere between the cheap heavy glasses from discount stores, and the eggshell-thin stemware you pay so much for. 2. The price speaks for itself. 3. One glass was broken on arrival, so I used the website to register a return, but before I got around to mailing the broken glass back, I received the replacement - 3 days after I filled in the web form! Also, I've washed these glasses in the dishwasher about a dozen times with no problems.

Good glasses, good service.

5 out of 5 stars What a deal!   December 30, 2003

We own Riedel glasses (which we love) but they are expensive to replace ($80 for 6 Burgundy glasses is a great deal). I've read articles which compared the two brands and, unless you're buying the Sommelier version, they found that for most wine consumers there was barely enough of a difference to justify the "normal" difference in cost. When I saw the price here I immediately bought one "set" (Burgundy and Bordeaux) and then, after a couple of days, bought another. In the end I had 12 Burgundy and 12 Bordeaux for less than the cost of 6 Riedel Vinium Burgundy glasses! Also, none were broken.
