Load the ice cubes in, crank away, and stop when the ice reaches the proper consistency, from coarse to fine, for either cocktails, slushies, or a bed of ice for displaying oysters on the half-shell. The top and handle are sturdily constructed of metal in a polished chrome finish, while the plastic base is available in a choice of clear or a translucent color. This ice crusher works as expected, the handle is easier to turn if the ice cubes are wet.

Retro Ice Crusher September 1, 2008
Looked for a hand cranked ice crusher since my "real" antique one finally bite the dust. Should have looked on Amazon first but didn't. Found one and bought it, love it but felt it was a little over priced for what it is.

The Metrokane Retro Crusher Received was not well made. August 17, 2008
The crusher makes absolutely the perfect size ice chunks for my wife's Mojito. Unfortunately the unit we received has fallen apart with making ice for no more than 20 drinks.

On arrival the hinge pin attaching the lid to the crusher assembly worked out. The workaround was to reinsert the pin each time it was out. Next one of the four screws connecting the crusher assembly to the crushing mechanism came out. The body threads were worn and the screw could not stay when reinserted. However, the unit would still function in the mission to make Mojito ice.

Finally the crank handle separated from the crusher shaft. This was the end of usefulness for the unit. I guess a bolt of some sort could be inserted in the shaft and the unit would function.

I am pleased to see other reviews were this brand and model has held up well.

Based on my experience, I would not purchase it without a guarantee of at least 30 days and the promise to fully refund purchase price plus shipping and handling both to you and return to the vendor.

FANTASTIC July 14, 2008
My wife took a chance based on the reviews whether or not this Retro Ice Crusher ("RIC") would actually crush ice ... IT WAS GREAT! NOTE WHILE USING THE RIC: If we hit a little jam and it stuck, we just went in reverse for a second, and then went right back into forward motion. We had a full bar of pre-mixed cocktails for a summer party and because just about everything was going to need crushed ice due to some cocktails not being on ice ... This RIC did stand-up to a challenging night and IT WAS AN AMAZING LITTLE CONTRAPTION!!! Our guests loved it and everyone was asking my wife where she purchased it, so she told them ... Amazon.com!

I bought this ice crusher after going through (2) electric crushers by
Waring Pro. The Waring Pro is not designed for every day use, because
after about 6-8 weeks the crushing gears become damaged and slip, poor
design. I must say this little crusher is built to last and holds up to
several uses each day, also found that if you wet the ice before crushing
the cranking is slightly easier.
