Amazon.com Review
If cooking with a pressure cooker sounds old-fashioned, think again. Great strides have enhanced the Duromatic since its inception in 1949. Swiss company Kuhn Rikon has made the pressure cooker quieter, safer, and a smart option in today's world, given how quickly it cooks and how much energy it saves. Pressure cookers are rapidly gaining in popularity, and this one is an exceptional model crafted in Switzerland. You'll find such foods as rice, grains, stews, poultry, and vegetables cook in just one-third the time of conventional methods, and retain vital nutrients. Choose from a variety of sizes to meet any household's needs. By saving 70 percent of the gas or electricity normally used in conventional cooking, the pressure cooker can pay for itself in just months.

The Duromatic is constructed of 18/10 stainless steel that encapsulates a solid aluminum core in the base for quick, even heating. Put in your ingredients (recipes are included), and the integrated lid automatically locks and won't open under pressure. A new generation spring-loaded valve uses red lines to show you at a glance whether the right pressure has been reached, and when cooking is done, you simply turn the knob for quick or slow release. Unlike old models, the Duromatic cooks quietly, without hissing, and five safety releases let you rest assured the pressure won't get too great. Kuhn Rikon covers the dishwasher-safe Duromatic with a 10-year warranty on materials and workmanship, and guarantees parts will be available for 15 years. --Ann Bieri

Product Description
Have your roast ready for a family of eight or more in a third of the time! This Duromatic cooker offers a hasty method of cooking and enough room for a single meal and then some. Consider it a great resource for canning and simmering stocks, too. The spring-loaded valve takes away the guesswork of cooking by offering visual indicators for you to see the exact pressure so you can plan your cooking accordingly. And, unlike pressure cookers of yesteryear, you'll never experience noisy steam escaping or mushy food! The integrated lid-locking system offers no fewer than five safety release systems. Perhaps most important is that you can cook high-fiber, low-fat foods in record time while preserving essential vitamins and nutrients - and conserving energy! The 18/10 stainless surface won't interact with food; interior fill lines prevent overfilling. Comes with a Quick Cuisine cookbook that includes delicious recipes for everything from savory dishes to desserts.Part of the Kuhn Rikon family of products, Duromatic pressure cookers are made by experts with more than 50 years experience in their field. Each cooker combines the latest technology with top-notch quality. Their safety design has set the standard worldwide.

4 out of 5 stars is Duromatic better than the lesser priced KR 7.4 qt pressure cooker?   June 18, 2008

I thimk the simpler less expensive KR product is as good as the Duromatic. The only advantage being an easier way to release pressure.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pressure Cooker!!!!!!!!!   June 16, 2008

Far better than the hissing monster it replaced!! Heavy-guaged stainless steel body and lid.

Designed never to hiss until or unless safety valves releases because of an abnormal function!! Very quiet and efficient. Superior construction!!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, not perfect   April 5, 2008

We don't cook a whole lot and never planned to use this PC much, but it does get occasional use. It seems to have both good and not-so-good features. On the down-side it does seem to be kind of flimsy and made of very thin metal, maybe this is all the thickness needed for this PC. We had a T-Fal (if I remember right) that was so thick and heavy it had to be bulletproof, worked very well and cleaned up beautifully. I dropped the lid on the tile floor and it would never seal up again, since we don't use a PC often we kind of forgot about it.

We live in a foothills suburb west of Denver at over a mile in elevation and lots of things take longer to cook as water boils at a lower temp at higher elevation (200 degrees instead of 212), and even with a PC you still have to add extra time to anything you cook. When you then add the time needed for natural pressure release (recommended for most recipes it seems), which can be like 20 minutes, you're not saving as much time as you might think. "30-minute lamb stew!" Yeah, right.

We cook on an electric Ceran cooktop, a great-looking piece of work with no knobs, just touch the glass, so it's easy to clean and when not in use looks almost invisible. But it is electric so any cooking needs some extra care as electric burners don't adjust heat very quickly. Using the PC (and any brand would be the same), takes more attention than I'd like to put in. The old jiggle-top PC's didn't need to be watched much as you could hear it across the room - if it was hissing and burping it was doing its' stuff. The Kuhn-Rikon needs to be watched a lot as it is very quiet and it's easy to overheat if you're not watching. Eventually I find the right setting, but it's different every time as the amount of food inside is always different. On the big plus side you need very little liquid in this pot, as it loses very little to steam while cooking, and the food flavor seems a lot more intense.

The first time after use we soaked it in hot soapy water for a while (quite a while actually), and cleaned it up exactly as recommended, and noticed a lot of almost white small circular stains at the bottom. I don't know what would cause this, we had done short ribs with red wine, and browned the ribs in a separate pan so maybe it was the wine. We Used Bar Keepers Friend as recommended, and hesitated to really scrub it with anything stronger like SOS as there's supposed to be some special titanium coating on the stainless steel.

Overall We found this to be good for our uses with the limitations we knew about before purchase. It is a beautiful piece, almost like art, quiet during cooking and needs litle extra liquid, a big plus. It also takes more attention than we'd like to spend on it, but if we cooked on gas it would probably be easier.

5 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Cookware   January 28, 2008

We have three Kuhn Rikon pressure cookers that we use almost every time we cook - this is the main cookware we use. It's fast, easy, and it saves energy becaues it takes less time to cook. And the food's great - I like eating at home better than any restaurant.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, high quality cooker.   January 10, 2008

We got this about a month ago, and have used it several times.

The device is well constructed, safe, with multiple safety mechanisms in place, and is very tight. It doesn't seem to lose much water at all..

We are pleased with this and plan on getting a lot of use out of it.
