Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com essential video
Rebecca is an ageless, timeless adult movie about a woman who marries a widower but fears she lives in the shadow of her predecessor. This was Hitchcock's first American feature, and it garnered the Best Picture statue at the 1941 Academy Awards. In today's films, most twists and surprises are ridiculous or just gratuitous, so it's sobering to look back on this film where every revelation not only shocks, but makes organic sense with the story line. Laurence Olivier is dashing and weak, fierce and cowed. Joan Fontaine is strong yet submissive, defiant yet accommodating. There isn't a false moment or misstep, but the film must have killed the employment outlook of any women named Danvers for about 20 years. Brilliant stuff. --Keith Simanton

1 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the movie, 1 for the dvd   December 16, 2008

I found out back in August this movie was going to be released in October on DVD. I was so excited because i have seen this movie before on TCM and absolutely LOVED it. Needless to say I was counting down the days until I received the dvd. I was so disappointed when i received this dvd because it didn't work properly on any of my 3 dvd players, my laptop, or desktop computer. It made a very loud "whirring" noise and would stop and not play anymore. So I exchanged it, thinking (really more hoping) it might've just been an isolated incident and found the same results with the second one. I was so sad and returned it, this time for a refund.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of Hitch's masterpieces   December 2, 2008

Rebecca (1940) is the only film directed by Alfred Hitchcock that won an Oscar as best picture and it is also his first american film. It certainly has many of Hitch's trademarks (the opening sequence for example)but imho it is an overrated film, the performances are dull with the exceptcion of Judith Anderson`s role and the script is weak. Suspicion , Notorius , Strangers on a Train are by far better films in which the Master of Suspense displays all his genius. Sincerely I expected a more interesting film.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful classic   November 29, 2008

Love this classic black and white! Would definitely recommend it for late night viewing..

4 out of 5 stars Old Movies   November 25, 2008
You know, you cannot compare older movies to today's movies. There was more substance. I have always like this movie about Rebecca. There are very few movies by Alfred Hitchcock that I do not like.
